What is Cycle Speedway?

Since 1946, Cycle Speedway has been one of Britain’s most exciting sports. Developed under the influence of motorised speedway, Cycle speedway is a form of racing on tracks which vary in length from 65 to 90 metres, situated across the length and breadth of Britain; from large towns and cities to rural village settings.  These venues come alive during the racing season which covers the months through from April to October.

Cycle Speedway tests the bike handling, physical fitness and technical ability of the riders. Such skills can only be gained through experience, and so it’s  unsurprising that many of the top class competitors are in their late twenties or early thirties.  But rest assured, there is plenty of racing to be had for younger riders!

Team Racing is the life blood of the sport and major leagues operate in regions of England, Wales and Scotland.  Matches take place at weekends and in addition to regular team fixtures a number of club events such as four team tournaments, best pairs and individual competitions add variety to the racing calendar.

From local mid-week competitions through to International Championships, Cycle Speedway has much to offer the potential rider, official or spectator.  If you would like to know more about the sport in your area please contact us.

5-Star Food Hygiene Award ⭐

Astley & Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club is proud to have been awarded a 5-Star Food Hygiene Rating by Wigan Council in September 2025, recognising the club’s excellent standards in food preparation, cleanliness and safety. The rating reflects the dedication of the club’s volunteers who run the clubhouse catering facilities, providing visitors, riders and supporters with a welcoming place to enjoy tea, coffee and freshly prepared food on race days and training nights. This achievement highlights A&T’s commitment to creating a safe, friendly and high-quality environment for everyone attending the track.
